Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his son Ismail built the Kaaba for the first time as a place of worship for one God. This was the first home that was created for humans to worship Allah, according to Allah (the Glorified and Exalted), who declares this in the Quran (the Glorified and Exalted). Soon after Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) passed away, idols began to be placed inside the Kaaba. The idols inside the Kaaba were not demolished until after Prophet Muhammad (may Allah grant him mercy and peace) overcame the idolaters.
Every Muslim is obligated, in accordance with one of Islam’s Five Pillars, to make the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca at least once during his or her lifetime, if possible. Walking seven times anticlockwise around the Kaaba is a requirement for several Hajj rituals. During Umrah, travelers also conduct this circumambulation (Tawaf).
No matter where they are, Muslims throughout the world bow to the Kaaba during prayers. The Qiblah is facing in this situation.
As mentioned in this verse in the Quran, “Verily, We have seen the turning of your (Muhammad’s) face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah (prayer direction) that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Masjid al-Haram. And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction.” [2:144 ]
